What Is Toastmasters?

Toastmaster Clubs are diverse and inclusive where we have fun, socialise, deliver speeches and toasts, hone our leadership skills and sometimes even hold contests – all in a structured manner in line with our education program and mission statement of providing a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills. (NB: Members must be at least 18 years old.)

From the first moment a club member experiences the Toastmasters program, they can count on being part of a friendly group of like-minded individuals, who mutually support and encourage one another's personal growth.

What Toastmasters is NOT

  • politically, religiously or culturally affiliated

  • a club where you only deliver speeches or toasts

  • a competitive platform where you are competing against each other

  • an ad-hoc, unstructured meeting

  • for “old people”, working people, or people from any specific walk of life

  • just a social group

Toastmasters is also a NOT-For-Profit!

Why Northern Beaches Toastmasters

Northern Beaches Toastmasters Club is a club with a difference.  Meeting each month at a different Restaurant along the Northern Beaches, it offers a unique opportunity to develop great leadership and public speaking skills in a friendly and supportive environment.

If you are about to get married and worried about giving a speech, or think that learning how to control your nerves and give great presentations would help you in some other aspects of your life, then Toastmasters is the answer.

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month at a variety of local restaurants where we share fun, camaraderie and some seriously good food as we learn and progress towards achieving our goals.

  • What are the costs involved?
Guests pay $45 per meeting, which covers the cost of their meal (the show is free 😉). We follow each restaurant's BYO policy. In addition to meeting costs, members pay a one-off $50 joining fee and a $108 semi-annual Toastmasters International membership fee.
  • What happens at a meeting?
    a. Firstly, there is an agenda set out for the entire meeting, which is usually themed, and the meeting is run by the Chairman of the meeting. b. Guests are welcomed and sat with an experienced member to guide them through the meeting. c. Table topics is where guests have a chance to participate along with members in doing a 1 minute response to a random question – great practice for impromptu speaking where you can fake it until you make it. d. Prepared speeches, usually 5-7 mins, are presented. e. Speeches and Table Topics responses are evaluated – highlighting what was done well and areas for improvement. All aspects of the meeting are evaluated. f. There is a Timer who times each session, helping us to learn what it is like to speak for 1 minute or 5-7 minutes. g. There will be a Toast and some other smaller roles, such as a Word of the Day, Humour or Mystery Spot, Meal Evaluation. h. There is a 30 minute dinner break in the middle for us to enjoy good food, good beverages of choice and of course, good company!
  • What is the dress code for attending meetings?
At Northern Beaches Toastmasters Club, we want our guests to feel relaxed and enjoy their experience to the fullest. Therefore, we do not enforce a strict dress code and instead encourage attendees to wear whatever makes them feel comfortable. Whether you prefer casual attire or like to dress up for a night out, you're welcome at our club. Our priority is ensuring that you have a memorable and enjoyable visit.
  • Do I have to speak as a guest at the meeting?
No, you don’t have to, but you can choose to participate in Table Topics. All you have to do is answer a random question for one minute, and you can say whatever you want (you can even lie if you don't know what to say; we don’t mind! 😅).
  • How many times can I attend as a guest?
Our club has an open-ended policy, meaning you are welcome to attend as a guest as often as you like. You don't have to join to join in on the fun! However, you will only get the full benefit of Toastmasters' experience if you join as a member and participate in the Pathways program, presenting speeches and honing your leadership skills. Increased confidence and skills come from the practice offered by being a member.
  • What happens when I become a member?
You will have the opportunity to have a mentor who will assist you in developing the skills you seek as a leader and speaker. An experienced member will give you an introduction session to the Toastmasters online education program Pathways, guiding you through the various flexible development options and helping you choose a Path tailored specifically to your current needs. You will be encouraged to deliver your first speech – your Ice Breaker – soon after becoming a member.
